| Dear Customer, | With the advent of the digital era, cyber frauds are on the rise with fraudsters finding ways to cheat you out of your hard-earned money. Digital Arrest is a recent type of cyber scam where fraudsters pretend to be law enforcement agents or government officials. The scam typically starts with a call, SMS or WhatsApp message, which is then escalated to a fake officer who intimidates the victim with threats of ‘digital arrest’. | | | Here is how they carry out the fraud | | | | 01 | Fraudsters posing as officials from reputed organisations like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)/Enforcement Directorate (ED), the Income Tax Department, etc., will contact you and threaten legal action or heavy fines to extort money from you. | | | | 02 | They can also pose as Cyber Crime officers claiming that they are in receipt of a courier containing illegal items in your name. | | | | 03 | Then, to evade legal proceedings, they ask you to transfer funds into their accounts or may convince you into revealing sensitive information such as bank account details, Debit Card numbers, and CVV codes. Being held by fear, you will end up falling prey to the fraudster’s trap and transferring funds into their account. | | | | | How to safeguard yourself against such ‘Digital Arrest’ frauds | | | | Fraudsters rely on people’s natural instincts to react to any fear or threat with panic. Stay calm, ask questions and think before you reply and give out any information. | | | | Digital arrests do not exist in Indian law and no enforcement agency would ever ask citizens for personal details by phone or video call. | | | | Do not respond to fraudulent emails, SMS, or calls that ask you for passwords, MPIN, UPI PIN, OTP, or Debit/Credit Card numbers. Kotak Mahindra Bank or its employees/representatives will never ask for your personal account information. | | | | If the caller is accusing you of an offence, be confident and ask for more information about the alleged accusation/offence. At times, fraudsters drop the call when you counter-question them. | | | | Do not click on links received from unknown sources/sender IDs. They could lead to fake websites that often look similar to authentic sites and apps! | | | | If you have a doubt about a call or message and suspect it to be a fraud, visit the nearest police station to get clarity or to report it. | | | | Look for the padlock sign or ‘https’ in the status bar of your web browser while transacting to ensure the website is genuine. | | | | | To report a fraud or any suspicious activity, call 1930 or the Bank’s dedicated fraud reporting number- 1800 209 0000, or report it here. | | For more safe banking tips | | | Warm regards, Team Kotak Mahindra Bank | | | | Please do not reply to this mail as this is an automated mail service. | | | |
